Rejected ideas for the restaurant's name include Writers Block Cafe, Broken Bread Cafe and White Rabbit Cafe, the latter inspired by The Matrix. The name refers to American poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1930s, prior to gaining recognition as a poet. Shallal obtained a loan from black-owned Industrial Bank, located at 11th and U streets. Concerned that his creation of a trendy artistic space would clash with U Street's traditional identity, Shallal reached out for support from community leaders, neighborhood groups, church organizations, schools and radio stations prior to opening the location. We had to ask four times for a refill on water, and they could probably sell a little more food and drinks by checking their tables more frequently. Servers are polite and work hard, but there is room for improvement. The restaurant partners with local organizations to provide job training for servers and culinary workers. Loaded nacho and the shrimp/crab fritters were great appetizers. The blackened salmon was excellent and served hot, not lukewarm as in many restaurants. We’ve eaten at this restaurant twice and have been really happy with the food quality both times. The servers also inquire about food allergies or sensitivity to help guide selections. Gluten-free options are clear.y identified. Vegans, vegetarians and carnivores will all find something tasty to eat. Like other B&P restaurants, the menu has a great variety and selection of food. Many of us in Ward 8 have waited for years for this restaurant to open.
